Target Information

Rat caldesmon (CaD) is a 89-kDa actin-binding protein widely expressed in rat smooth muscle tissues (vascular, gastrointestinal, uterine) and non-muscle cells (fibroblasts, epithelial cells). It regulates actin-myosin interaction: in smooth muscle, it inhibits contraction at low calcium levels and releases this inhibition upon calcium-calmodulin binding, enabling muscle tone control. In non-muscle cells, it stabilizes the cytoskeleton, supports cell migration, and modulates membrane protrusion. Abundant in rat tissues requiring mechanical flexibility or motility, it maintains cellular structure and tissue contractile function. As a key mediator of actin cytoskeleton dynamics and smooth muscle contraction, rat caldesmon is a critical target for studying vascular physiology, gastrointestinal motility disorders, and cytoskeleton-related cellular processes.
