Rat cadherin 5 (CDH5, VE-cadherin) is a 135-kDa transmembrane glycoprotein exclusively expressed in rat vascular endothelial cells-lining arteries, veins, and capillaries across all tissues. It mediates calcium-dependent homophilic adhesion between adjacent endothelial cells, forming tight adherens junctions that maintain vascular barrier integrity, regulate permeability, and prevent extravasation of plasma components. It also interacts with cytoskeletal proteins and signaling molecules to modulate endothelial cell migration, proliferation, and angiogenesis, supporting vascular development and tissue repair. Critical for vascular homeostasis, its dysfunction disrupts barrier function in inflammation or injury. As a key endothelial-specific marker and adhesion mediator, rat CDH5 is a critical target for studying vascular biology, inflammatory disorders, and angiogenesis-related pathological processes.
