Rat ABCG8 is a half-size integral membrane transporter possessing conserved ATP-binding and sterol-binding domains that maintain stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It accumulates in absorptive epithelial cells and forms heterodimeric complexes embedded on apical plasma membranes. Its single-nucleotide-binding domain sterol transport structure and digestive tract-enriched expression separate it from soluble secreted cytokines, cytoplasmic signal adaptors and nuclear transcription factors with simplified single-domain assemblies widely distributed across non-absorptive somatic cell subgroups.
