Rat Activity-Regulated Cytoskeleton-Associated Protein (ARC) is an immediate-early gene product rapidly induced by neuronal activity in brain, hippocampus, and cortex. It localizes to dendrites and synaptic sites, where it polymerizes actin and interacts with endocytic machinery to regulate AMPA receptor trafficking and synaptic strength. ARC is essential for long-term potentiation, memory consolidation, and experience-dependent plasticity. Its quick induction and degradation couple transient stimulation to lasting structural change. As a key mediator of activity-dependent remodeling, ARC is an important target for studies of learning, memory, and neuroadaptation.
