Mouse Solute Carrier Family 30, Member 5 (SLC30A5) is a zinc efflux transporter that moves cytoplasmic Zn²⁺ into intracellular vesicles or the extracellular space, maintaining zinc homeostasis. Widely expressed in brain, intestine, and pancreas, it modulates metalloenzyme activity, insulin storage, and synaptic transmission. SLC30A5 is localized to the Golgi and plasma membrane, where it protects against zinc overload. As a key regulator of cellular zinc balance, SLC30A5 is an important target for studies of trace-element metabolism, neurotransmission, and metabolic disorders.
