Mouse Serine Palmitoyltransferase, Long Chain Base Subunit 3 (SPTLC3) is a rate-limiting enzyme in de novo sphingolipid synthesis. It condenses serine with palmitoyl-CoA to form 3-ketodihydrosphingosine, the precursor for ceramides and sphingomyelins essential for membrane structure and signaling. SPTLC3 is expressed in brain, lung, and adipose tissue, where it modulates apoptosis, inflammation, and lipid homeostasis. As the gateway to sphingolipid metabolism, SPTLC3 is an important target for studies of metabolic disorders, neurodegeneration, and cancer biology.
