It is constitutively expressed on neurons, glia, and epithelial cells, where it dephosphorylates tyrosine residues on cytoskeletal, adhesion, and signaling proteins to modulate axon guidance, cell motility, and synaptic strength. The ectodomain mediates homophilic binding and serves as a cell-surface receptor, while the catalytic tails counterbalance kinase signaling.
