Mouse NOV is a secreted matricellular protein with conserved cysteine-rich structural domains that sustain stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It is produced by fibroblasts, osteoblasts and vascular cell populations and accumulates within extracellular matrix spaces. Its secreted matrix-binding architecture and mesenchymal cell-biased expression distinguish it from intracellular cytoplasmic kinases, plasma membrane transmembrane receptors and chromatin-binding nuclear transcriptional regulators with simplified single-domain assemblies and ubiquitous tissue expression patterns.
