Target Information

Mouse Mitochondrial Methionyl-tRNA Formyltransferase (MTFMT) is a matrix enzyme that formylates mitochondrial methionyl-tRNA using 10-formyltetrahydrofolate, producing the initiator fMet-tRNA necessary for organellar translation. Expressed ubiquitously but enriched in heart, brain, and muscle, MTFMT ensures correct initiation of all thirteen mitochondrial-encoded oxidative-phosphorylation subunits. Loss of MTFMT activity disrupts respiratory-chain assembly and ATP synthesis. As the sole source of mitochondrial translation initiation, MTFMT is an important target for studies of mitochondrial biogenesis, metabolic disorders, and inherited mitochondrial myopathies.
