Mouse Keratin 71 (KRT71) is a type II epithelial keratin expressed in hair follicle inner root sheath and companion layer cells. It forms heteropolymeric intermediate filaments that provide mechanical support and shape to the growing hair shaft. KRT71 mutations disrupt follicle architecture, leading to altered coat texture and growth. The protein is also a marker for epithelial differentiation in skin appendages. As a key structural component of the pilosebaceous unit, KRT71 is a valuable target for studies of hair biology and dermatological disorders.
