Target Information

Mouse frataxin (FXN) is a 18-kDa mitochondrial protein ubiquitously expressed in murine tissues, with enriched levels in heart, liver, and skeletal muscle. It functions as a chaperone for iron-sulfur cluster (ISC) biosynthesis, regulating mitochondrial iron homeostasis and protecting against iron-induced oxidative stress. Critical for mitochondrial respiratory chain function, energy metabolism, and cellular viability in mice, its deficiency impairs ISC-dependent enzyme activity, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. Dysregulated expression associates with Friedreich's ataxia, cardiomyopathy, and neurodegeneration in murine models. As a key mediator of mitochondrial iron metabolism and ISC biogenesis, mouse FXN is a critical target for studying mitochondrial pathobiology, neurodegenerative diseases, and protein replacement therapeutics.
