It exists widely in various somatic cell populations and participates in intracellular protein turnover complexes. Its multi-domain adaptor structure and ubiquitous tissue expression differentiate it from cell-surface transmembrane receptors, secreted circulating signaling ligands and chromatin-binding nuclear transcription factors with simplified single-domain architectures and restricted cell-type expression patterns.
