Mouse ATP-binding cassette transporter C6 (ABCC6) is a membrane protein that exports anionic metabolites and nucleotide conjugates out of hepatocytes and renal proximal tubules. It maintains systemic homeostasis of phosphate and pyrophosphate, influencing extracellular matrix integrity. ABCC6 is localized to the basolateral plasma membrane, where its ATP-driven efflux activity prevents accumulation of potentially harmful metabolites. As a key regulator of mineral metabolism, ABCC6 is an important target for studies of connective-tissue disorders and ectopic calcification.
