Target Information
Mouse activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) is a 90-kDa type II transmembrane protein predominantly localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of mouse cells-with widespread expression across tissues, notably the liver, pancreas, and brain. As a key mediator of the unfolded protein response (UPR), it is activated by ER stress: upon cleavage, its cytoplasmic domain translocates to the nucleus, binding to ER stress response elements (ERSEs) to induce genes encoding chaperones and ER-associated degradation (ERAD) components. These target genes enhance protein folding capacity and clear misfolded proteins, restoring ER homeostasis. Critical for cellular adaptation to stress, it modulates tissue integrity in physiological processes (e.g., development) and pathological states (e.g., metabolic dysfunction, neurodegeneration). As a central UPR regulator, mouse ATF6 is a critical target for studying ER stress-related disorders and cellular stress adaptation.
