Target Information
Equine transferrin receptor (TfR) is a transmembrane glycoprotein of the transferrin receptor family, a core mediator of cellular iron uptake. It features two conserved extracellular transferrin-binding domains, a single transmembrane segment, and a cytoplasmic tail with internalization motifs critical for structural integrity and endocytic trafficking. It localizes to the cell membranes of equine erythroid precursor cells, hepatocytes and immune cells, with negligible levels in differentiated erythrocytes and adipose tissues. The protein mediates transferrin-bound iron internalization and intracellular iron homeostasis, with conserved motifs for ligand binding and clathrin-dependent endocytosis. Equine TfR shares core functional domains with mammalian orthologs, and has distinct binding affinity differentiating it from other iron metabolism regulators.
