Target Information
Bovine ferritin light polypeptide (FTL) is a 175-residue subunit that assembles into the 24-mer ferritin shell, forming a roughly spherical nanocage with an 8 nm central cavity capable of storing up to 4,500 iron atoms as ferrihydrite. The chain contributes four-helix bundle motifs that line narrow channels regulating Fe²+ entry and proton egress, while its acidic residues nucleate mineralization. FTL predominates in bovine spleen, liver and kidney, yielding heteropolymers with ferritin heavy chains. Antibodies generated against recombinant bovine FTL detect the native 19 kDa subunit with negligible cross-reactivity to FTH1 or other shell proteins, enabling precise immunoblot and immunohistochemical localization in bovine tissue extracts and sections.
