Target Information
Bovine aggrecan is a large chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan encoded by the ACAN gene in Bos taurus, mapped to chromosome 7. It belongs to the lectican proteoglycan family, featuring a conserved modular structure including N-terminal globular domain, extended glycosaminoglycan attachment region and C-terminal globular domains. It localizes predominantly to extracellular matrix of cartilaginous tissues, with tissue-specific expression in bovine articular cartilage, growth plate and intervertebral disc, with no expression in non-cartilage tissues. The protein mediates cartilage hydration and structural integrity maintenance, with conserved motifs critical for glycosaminoglycan linkage and protein interaction. Bovine aggrecan shares core functional domains with mammalian orthologs, and has distinct glycosylation patterns differentiating it from versican and other lectican family members.
