Androstenedione is a pivotal C19 Δ4-steroid intermediate that sits at the metabolic crossroads between dehydroepiandrosterone and potent androgens/estrogens. Synthesized in adrenal cortex and gonadal tissue, this weak androgen carries a 17-keto group readily reduced by 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases to yield testosterone or aromatized to estrone. Circulating levels fluctuate with adrenal and gonadal activity, making it a sensitive gauge of steroidogenic output.
