Target Information

17-Hydroxyprogesterone is a C21 steroid carrying a hydroxyl at carbon 17 and a 3-oxo-Δ4 structure, positioned one enzymatic step downstream of progesterone within the adrenal and gonadal steroidogenic cascades. Its 17α-hydroxyl group prevents mineralocorticoid activity while priming the molecule for further conversion to androgens and cortisol. Basal concentrations rise during adrenal zona reticularis maturation, and circulating values mirror acute steroidogenic capacity. Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies generated against 17-OH-progesterone-carrier conjugates recognize the native hapten with minimal cross-reactivity to structurally related pregnanes, providing a selective probe for direct quantification in serum, plasma and tissue extracts across species.
