Target Information
Aggrecan core protein is a key component of the extracellular matrix in cartilaginous tissues, primarily functioning to resist compression in cartilage. It strongly binds to hyaluronic acid through its N-terminal globular region and may have a regulatory role in cartilage matrix assembly. In rabbits, the ACAN gene encodes the aggrecan core protein. During cartilage tissue repair in rabbits, the expression level and structural integrity of Aggrecan core proteins have an important impact on the repair outcome. Degradation of Aggrecan core proteins is one of the important mechanisms leading to degenerative changes in cartilage in pathological states such as arthritis.
