Prometryn is a selective, systemic triazine herbicide widely used to control annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in crops like cotton, celery, and cereal grains. It concerns animal-derived food safety because livestock can ingest its residues by consuming treated crops, crop by-products, or contaminated forage and water. Prometryn has the potential to accumulate in animal tissues and can be transferred into milk, fat, liver, kidney, and meat. Due to concerns regarding its chronic toxicological impact, including hematological and reproductive disruptions, strict Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) are maintained globally to prevent consumer exposure through contaminated animal products.
