Profenofos is a broad-spectrum, non-systemic organophosphorus insecticide and acaricide used extensively in agriculture to control a wide variety of chewing and sucking pests. It impacts animal-derived food safety primarily through dietary carryover: livestock and poultry can ingest profenofos residues when grazing on treated pastures or consuming contaminated feed crops and silage. Because it is fat-soluble, it can accumulate in animal tissues and transfer into milk, eggs, and meat. It presents a serious food safety concern due to its acute neurotoxicity as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which can cause severe nervous system dysfunction in humans, requiring strict regulatory monitoring and compliance with Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs).
