Target Information
Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) is a mitochondrial protein which belongs to the family of mitochondrial anion carrier proteins. Mitochondrial Uncoupling Protein 2 is encoded by the UCP2 gene in pigs. It is a member of uncoupling proteins which are mitochondrial membrane transporters that are involved in thermogenesis. It dissipates the mitochondrial membrane potential as heat, a process known as the mitochondrial proton leak. By reducing the mitochondrial membrane potential, UCP2 helps lower the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
