Target Information

Mucins are a family of high molecular weight, highly glycosylated proteins (glycoconjugates) produced by epithelial tissues in most animals. Mucins reduce friction between opposing surfaces, protecting tissues from irritation and wear and tear. Mucins form a physical barrier that traps and removes pathogens, dust particles, and other harmful substances. Pig gastric mucus contains a number of distinctly different mucin populations, varying in buoyant density, size, 'acidity', glycosylation, sulphation and tissue origin.
