Neurofilament light polypeptide, also known as neurofilament light chain, abbreviated to NF-L or Nfl and with the HGNC name NEFL is a member of the intermediate filament protein family. Neurofilament Light Polypeptide is encoded by the NEFL gene in pigs. NEFL is a cytoskeletal component of mature neurons that provides structural stability and determines axonal diameter and can be used as a blood biomarker of neuroaxonal damage in several neurodegenerative diseases.
