Perkinsus marinus, an alveolate species within the phylum Perkinsozoa, resembles a dinoflagellate and is a well-known pathogen affecting oysters. It is responsible for significant mortality rates in oyster populations. This protist is found along the North American coastline, extending from New Brunswick to Florida and reaching the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.
