Target Information

Neorickettsia risticii, previously known as Ehrlichia risticii, is a gram-negative bacterium that is obligately intracellular, usually residing as an endosymbiont within parasitic flatworms, particularly flukes. This bacterium is transmitted vertically within a trematode, Acanthatrium oregonense, and its transmission is intricately linked to the life cycle of the fluke. Diarrhea is one of the common clinical signs of equine neorickettsiosis.
