Target Information

Zonadhesin binds to the zona pellucida of the egg in a species-specific manner and may play a role in gamete recognition and/or signaling. In mice, Zonadhesin (Zn) is a sperm-specific membrane protein that is crucial for the binding of sperm to the egg. Zn facilitates species-specific recognition and binding by interacting with the extracellular matrix, known as the zona pellucida, on the egg's outer layer. Zn mRNA is exclusively expressed in the testis and undergoes processing during sperm maturation, ultimately localizing to the apical region of the sperm head. While Zn-deficient mouse sperm can bind to eggs from other species, they are unable to bind to mouse eggs, underscoring the critical role of Zn in species-specific sperm-egg binding.
