Target Information
Xanthine dehydrogenase/oxidase (XDH) is a crucial enzyme in purine degradation, catalyzing the oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. It also contributes to the generation of reactive oxygen species. In mice, XDH has diverse biological functions, including roles in purine metabolism, antioxidant activity, inflammatory responses, and tissue repair. Mutations in the Xdh gene are linked to early renal failure (RENF) in mice, resulting in the loss of XDH activity in the liver and kidneys. This leads to urate deposition in the renal tubules, triggering renal fibrosis and interstitial inflammation. These findings underscore the importance of XDH in maintaining renal health and its broader role in metabolic and inflammatory processes.
