Target Information

X-box-binding protein 1 (XBP1) acts as a transcription factor during endoplasmic reticulum stress, playing a central role in regulating the unfolded protein response (UPR). It is essential for cardiac myogenesis and hepatogenesis during embryonic development, as well as for the development of secretory tissues such as the exocrine pancreas and salivary gland. In mice, XBP1 has a wide range of functions, influencing metabolism, neuroprotection, immune regulation, liver function, and retinal health. Notably, XBP1 is critical for the proper function of pancreatic β cells. Research has shown that XBP1 deficiency results in the dedifferentiation of pancreatic β cells, inhibits their transdifferentiation into α cells, and protects β cells from apoptosis under metabolic stress, thereby preserving their insulin secretion capacity. These findings underscore the vital role of XBP1 in maintaining pancreatic β cell function and overall metabolic health.
