Target Information

VGF (nerve growth factor-induced gene) is a protein with significant roles in the nervous and endocrine systems. In mice, VGF is involved in various processes, including neural development, regulation of energy balance, neuroprotection, and modeling of diseases. Induced by nerve growth factor (NGF), VGF is predominantly expressed in neurons and neuroendocrine cells, playing a crucial role in the hippocampus by regulating synaptic plasticity and memory functions through a mechanism dependent on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). For example, studies indicate that the C-terminal peptide of VGF can enhance hippocampal neuron synaptic activity and improve learning and memory via the BDNF signaling pathway. Additionally, VGF is vital in regulating energy balance and metabolism. In acute kidney injury (AKI) models, VGF has been identified as a stress response gene, upregulated in renal tubular epithelial cells through SOX9 regulation, suggesting a potential role for VGF in stress response, particularly in conditions such as acute kidney injury.
