Target Information
In mice, the primary function of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) is to facilitate the transport and metabolism of lipids, including the movement of triglycerides (TG) and cholesterol, and their metabolic regulation within the liver and adipose tissue. VLDL, a triglyceride-rich lipoprotein, is mainly synthesized by the liver and is responsible for delivering fatty acids to peripheral tissues like adipose and muscle tissue, thereby supporting energy storage and cellular function. VLDL facilitates its uptake and metabolism by binding to the very low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR), which is expressed in muscle, adipose tissue, and the liver, though its liver expression is low due to the liver's role as the primary site for clearing circulating lipoproteins. In mouse models exposed to a high-fat diet or genetic disorders affecting fat metabolism, abnormal VLDL function is closely linked to the development of various metabolic diseases.
