Target Information
Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a neuropeptide that engages in a wide range of physiological processes by activating the PACAP subfamily of class B1 G protein-coupled receptors, specifically VIP receptor 1 (VPR1) and VIP receptor 2 (VPR2). These receptors are abundantly expressed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, where VIP primarily plays neuroprotective and immune-modulatory roles. In mice, VIP is involved in various physiological and pathological processes, including immunoregulation, neuroprotection, intestinal function, cardiovascular health, and immune responses. VIP is particularly protective in the nervous system, promoting neuronal survival and axon regeneration through the activation of protein kinase C (PKC) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways. Moreover, VIP has been shown to ameliorate neuronal damage caused by toxins and demonstrates potential therapeutic effects on cognitive deficits in mouse models.
