Target Information
Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) plays a critical role in angiogenesis, vasculogenesis, and the growth of endothelial cells. It stimulates endothelial cell proliferation, enhances cell migration, prevents apoptosis, and increases blood vessel permeability. VEGF-A interacts with the FLT1/VEGFR1, KDR/VEGFR2, heparan sulfate, and heparin receptors, as well as the NRP1/neuropilin-1 receptor. In mice, VEGFA has diverse functions, including roles in reproduction, liver protection and regeneration, cardiac development and repair, hematopoiesis, and neonatal survival. Mice devoid of all VEGFA isoforms in granulocytes and oocytes exhibit decreased fertility, marked by impaired follicular development, lower ovulation rates, and smaller litter sizes. In a liver ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) model, VEGFA levels were elevated in non-fatty liver mice but significantly reduced in those with fatty livers.
