Target Information
Utrophin is a cytoskeletal protein closely related to dystrophin and is found in a wide range of tissues. At the neuromuscular junction, utrophin colocalizes with acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) and aids in forming and maintaining AChR clusters. However, even though utrophin-deficient mice (such as utrn−/− mice) exhibit reduced AChR numbers and diminished postsynaptic folding, the neuromuscular junction's overall structure and function remain intact, suggesting utrophin's role in the NMJ is not critical. Utrophin expression increases during muscle regeneration and can partially compensate for the pathological effects of dystrophin deficiency. For instance, in mdx mice (a model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy), upregulating utrophin can enhance muscle function and alleviate pathological conditions.
