Target Information

Urate Transporter 1 (URAT1) functions as an electroneutral antiporter, moving urate across the apical membrane of proximal tubular cells in exchange for monovalent organic or inorganic anions. It plays a role in the renal reabsorption of urate, contributing to the maintenance of blood uric acid levels. URAT1 expression is predominantly localized to the apical membrane of the renal tubule. In URAT1 knockout mice, although uric acid reabsorption decreases, serum uric acid levels remain largely unchanged, implying potential compensatory effects from other uric acid transporters, such as OAT1 and OAT3, or metabolic enzymes. URAT1 expression is found not only in renal tubules but also in the ependymal cells of the mouse ventricular system. Immunohistochemical analysis shows URAT1 expression on the cilia and apical membrane of periventricular ependymal cells.
