Target Information
Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1 (UCHL1) is a deubiquitinase involved in regulating various processes, including synaptic function, cardiac function, inflammatory response, and osteoclastogenesis. Vital for neuronal health and function, UCHL1 safeguards neurons by managing protein homeostasis and maintaining intracellular structural integrity. In mice, a deficiency in UCHL1 results in increased axonal damage, neuronal degeneration, and apoptosis within the cerebral cortex, leading to motor dysfunction and cognitive decline. In a cerebral ischemia model, restoration or inhibition of UCHL1 activity is associated with reduced brain damage and recovery of neurological function, indicating that it plays an important role in protection after brain injury.
