Target Information
Tryptophan 5-hydroxylase 1 (TPH1) catalyzes the oxidation of L-tryptophan to 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan, the rate-determining step in serotonin biosynthesis. TPH1 is the rate-limiting enzyme for peripheral serotonin production, converting tryptophan to 5-HT. It is primarily expressed in enterochromaffin cells in the intestine, lungs, and non-neuronal cells, rather than in the central nervous system. Mice lacking TPH1 exhibit abnormal cardiac functions, such as weakened left ventricular performance, dilated cardiomyopathy, and reduced adaptability to drug-induced stress. Additionally, alterations in maternal serotonin levels directly influence the cardiac development and function of their offspring.
