Troponin T in cardiac muscle is the tropomyosin-binding component of the troponin complex, a regulatory part of the thin filament that imparts calcium sensitivity to the actomyosin ATPase activity in striated muscle. In mice, Tnnt2 primarily regulates myocardial contraction and calcium signaling pathways, with mutations often linked to various cardiomyopathies. As a crucial element of cardiac myofibrils, Tnnt2 is essential for controlling myocardial contraction. It interacts with actin by anchoring the myosin light chain (MLC) along with troponins I and C, thereby managing the calcium-dependent contraction mechanism in the myocardium. The expression of Tnnt2 is vital for the differentiation and maturation of embryonic cardiomyocytes. Research indicates that loss of Tnnt2 leads to abnormal heart development during the embryonic stage in mice, resulting in early embryonic death due to impaired cardiomyocyte contraction.
