Target Information
Trehalase is an intestinal enzyme likely responsible for breaking down consumed trehalose. In mice, both trehalase and its metabolite, trehalose, have been associated with a variety of physiological functions, such as neuroprotection, metabolic regulation, anti-inflammatory effects, and the induction of autophagy. In a mouse model of MPS IIIB disease, trehalose was found to enhance retinal degeneration, reduce neuroinflammation, and alleviate storage burden by activating the TFEB transcriptional network. These findings suggest that trehalase might contribute to neuroprotection through its metabolite, trehalose.
