Target Information

Transthyretin is a protein that binds thyroid hormones and likely facilitates the transport of thyroxine from the bloodstream to the brain. In mice, transthyretin serves a wide array of functions, including the transport of vitamin A and thyroid hormones, maintenance of nervous system homeostasis, involvement in the pathological processes of amyloid diseases, and supporting liver function. As the primary transport protein for vitamin A (retinol) and thyroid hormones in mammals, transthyretin is essential for these processes. Research indicates that mice lacking the TTR gene exhibit significantly reduced plasma levels of retinol, retinol binding protein, and thyroid hormones, underscoring TTR's crucial role in metabolite transport.
