Target Information
Transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) is a serine protease anchored to the plasma membrane, known for cleaving at arginine residues. It plays a crucial role in proteolytic cascades essential for the normal physiological function of the prostate. TMPRSS2, induced by androgens, activates several substrates, including pro-hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), protease activated receptor-2 (F2RL1), and matriptase (ST14), leading to extracellular matrix disruption. TMPRSS2 is vital for the infection and transmission of various influenza viruses in mice. Research has demonstrated that mice lacking TMPRSS2 exhibit significant resistance to H1N1 and H7N9 influenza strains. In experiments involving H1N1 infection, TMPRSS2-deficient mice experienced markedly reduced weight loss and mortality, along with less pathological damage to the lungs.
