Target Information
Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 4 (TRPM4) is a calcium-activated selective cation channel that induces membrane depolarization. Although it is activated by elevated intracellular calcium (Ca2+), it is impermeable to Ca2+ itself. Instead, TRPM4 facilitates the transport of monovalent cations (Na+> K+> Cs+> Li+), leading to membrane depolarization. In mice, TRPM4 plays diverse roles in cardiac electrophysiology, neuronal activity, immune responses, inner ear hearing, and skin health. Specifically, TRPM4 is expressed in mouse cardiomyocytes, where it contributes to the electrophysiological functions of the heart. Research has demonstrated that TRPM4 knockout (Trpm4⁻/⁻) mice exhibit enhanced cardiac contraction mediated by β-adrenergic receptors, a phenomenon likely linked to TRPM4's role in regulating calcium signaling within cardiomyocytes.
