Target Information
Endosomal acidification facilitates iron release, allowing the apotransferrin-receptor complex to recycle back to the cell surface. Once back in a neutral pH environment, the apotransferrin loses its affinity for the receptor. The transferrin receptor is crucial for the development of erythrocytes and the nervous system. Tfrc is a key molecule for iron absorption, enabling iron to enter cells via transferrin (Tf). In mouse intestinal epithelial cells, the absence of Tfrc results in significant damage to the intestinal barrier, which can be fully restored by expressing a mutant Tfrc gene that is unable to function as a Tf receptor.
