Bile acids are crucial for lipid digestion, as they form micelles by binding to bile acid binding proteins like L-FABP, thereby enhancing lipid solubilization and absorption. In mice, the active absorption of bile acids occurs primarily in the ileum through bile acid transporters such as ASBT. This process is vital for maintaining the intestinal barrier's integrity and ensuring normal lipid absorption. Additionally, bile acids play a role in cholesterol metabolism and help maintain cholesterol homeostasis by regulating the expression of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1). Beyond their role in lipid metabolism regulation, bile acids act as signaling molecules, influencing energy metabolism in the liver, intestine, and adipose tissue. They achieve this by activating nuclear receptors like FXR and G protein-coupled receptors such as TGR5.
