Target Information

Thyroglobulin serves as a substrate for producing the iodinated thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The synthesis of T3 and T4 includes iodinating specific tyrosine residues within thyroglobulin, followed by oxidative coupling. In mice, thyroglobulin is crucial for thyroid hormone synthesis, immune regulation, and its association with autoimmune diseases. It is a significant antigen in autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Research has demonstrated that thyroglobulin is highly immunogenic in mice, capable of triggering an antibody response. For instance, experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) can be induced by injecting thyroglobulin into immunized mice, a model extensively used to study the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases.
