Target Information
Thrombopoietin is a lineage-specific cytokine that influences the proliferation and maturation of megakaryocytes from their committed progenitor cells, primarily acting during the later stages of megakaryocyte development. It is likely the primary physiological regulator of circulating platelets. In mice, TPO functions predominantly to promote the proliferation and differentiation of megakaryocytes, accelerate hematopoietic recovery, enhance platelet activation, and offer therapeutic potential in pathological conditions. Following high-dose radiotherapy, TPO can significantly aid the hematopoietic recovery in mice. Research indicates that administering TPO before or immediately after radiotherapy notably increases the survival rate of mice and the number of bone marrow hematopoietic progenitor cells. Additionally, TPO injection can reduce the time required for mice to recover from a platelet-free state.
