Target Information
Tenascin is an extracellular matrix protein involved in guiding migrating neurons and axons during development, as well as in synaptic plasticity and neuronal regeneration. It facilitates neurite outgrowth when introduced to neurons in culture. In mice, TNC is pivotal for tissue repair and regeneration. For instance, TNC-deficient mice (TNC−/−) do not exhibit significant phenotypic changes in skin wound healing or regeneration following sciatic nerve transection. TNC also plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity within the hippocampus, with TNC−/− mice demonstrating decreased learning and memory abilities in certain behavioral tests. Furthermore, TNC is important in fibrosis and inflammatory responses; in a pulmonary fibrosis model, TNC−/− mice experience reduced fibrosis and less activation of the TGF-β signaling pathway.
