Target Information
Synaptophysin is thought to play a structural role by organizing membrane components and possibly targeting vesicles to the plasma membrane. It plays a critical role in regulating both short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity. As the primary protein of the synaptic vesicle membrane, synaptophysin is abundant in presynaptic terminals throughout the central nervous system. It is intricately linked to neurotransmitter release, synaptic vesicle formation and recycling, and synaptic plasticity. Studies highlight synaptophysin's vital role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis and maintaining neuronal endocytic capacity, essential for normal neuronal function and long-term potentiation (LTP). Interestingly, while mice lacking synaptophysin exhibit defects in synaptic vesicle endocytosis, their synaptic function is not entirely compromised, indicating that synaptophysin's role might be redundant in certain contexts.
