Target Information

Pulmonary surfactant-associated proteins enhance alveolar stability by reducing surface tension at the air-liquid interface within peripheral air spaces. SP-B, in particular, raises the collapse pressure of palmitic acid to nearly 70 millinewtons per meter. In neonatal mice, a deficiency in SP-B results in fatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), marked by alveolar collapse, drastically reduced lung compliance, and abnormal pulmonary surfactant. While SP-B deficiency in adult mice does not directly cause death, it greatly heightens susceptibility to oxygen-induced lung injury, evidenced by increased alveolar collapse, an intensified inflammatory response, and diminished lung function.
